Jill has been playing with Mazzy Star longer than most people would think. Most people I have encountered assume that Jill was first brought in to play bass on Among My Swan, though Jill has been touring with Mazzy Star since late 1993. I think it would be safe to call her a member of the band, and I'm very happy about that, she compliments the band very well. I know of several bands that Jill has been a part of prior to her playing with Mazzy Star. The first band that I know she played in was the A sexuals with Rozz Williams (of Christian Death). Later, while playing with another band, the Decadents, Jill caught the attention of Eva O. of The Super Heroines during a show: "She was great,she was all over the floor, I wanted her bad. Her name was Jill Emery. I thought 'she has to be in my band!!' " After that show, Eva asked Jill to join The Super Heroines, and Jill, knowing of them, said she would if she could bring along Decadents drummer Steve Darrow. Eva accepted the offer. While recording the album Souls That Save, Steve was replaced by China (Christian Death). It was suspected that Steve stuck around because he was interested in Jill romantically. Jill found her way into another band, Hole. She was their original bassist, co-writing many of their early songs. Before entering into Hole, Jill was a practicing painter, and one of her paintings graced the back cover of Hole's album Pretty On The Inside. From what I've heard, she abruptly left Hole in 1992 after a Hole show in LA. She immeadiatly joined Eva and Rozz (fresh from solo work) in a new band, Shadow Project. Hole's untalented singer,Courtney Love, was angry at Eva, saying that Eva "stole Hole's bass player". Regardless, after her work with Shadow Project, it would seem that Jill soon found her way into Mazzy Star. | Hole(Jill is on the far left in the yellow/orange dress.) | ||||||||||||||||
